Liberate Learning is a way for me to share with others some of what I’ve learned through my journey as an inclusive educator. I share techniques and strategies for powerful, equitable and engaging teaching and facilitation practice which you can slot straight into what you do best. It is my hope to create a world where everyone feels welcome and has the support they need to succeed (whatever that means for them). Remember, you don’t need to change the world to change someone’s world.
I want to talk about two things in this post. One is the classic argument between scale and quality in education and the other thing is artificial intelligence which I think often comes up when you have this conversation. So let me start by asking a rhetorical question that I'm going to immediately respond to. Can we do quality education at scale? I'm not sure... I think there are some things that can work at scale and there are other things that honestly fall apart, and those things that...
I've seen a few folks sharing marking practices (including some talking about feedback banks!). I thought I'd write up something explaining these, how they help mark more smoothly and potentially with richer feedback and crucially how this itself can be a data source about your students. So let's get into it! aside: you may like to read my prior post: feedback is for learning. What are feedback banks? In essence they are just an organised list of pre written blocks of feedback that you can...
I’m excited to share something I created in my workplace and just received permission to make creative commons (by attribution, non-commercial share-alike). https://sites.google.com/monash.edu/neurodivergence-accommodations This is a self-paced resource that I hope will be helpful for neurodivergent folks in workplaces to understand some of the challenges and supports, navigating self-disclosure and seeking help and includes a scenario to practice with. allies and supporters who want to help...
So as I find myself coming to, are you OK day for another year, I wanted to unpack some of the ideas that I shared during a presentation that I gave on the day as well as something I learnt from a really interesting session that was also run in flourishing. So the thing that often comes up for me, especially in the space where we're talking about say resilience is this idea of having to fit a very particular pattern of wellness and an expectation that everything sits on the individual to be...
for your information: I prepared this as a voice note, which was transcribed onto my phone into text, and sent it to myself to make this post. I have made minimal changes aside from formatting (headings, bolding, etc.) for readability so it will still somewhat be stream-of-consciousness. This is the easiest way for me to produce blog posts; meanwhile voice to text is just one example of a technology created for disability which is helpful for many more than have that specific disability....
This expands on my instagram post of the same name (have a look for a quick reference guide!) First of all I want to highlight that I plan to write this in a way that is a bit radical (at least for me). I’m writing this with a promise to myself not to go back and forth editing it a dozen times until I feel everything is ironed out, carefully nuanced, picturesque. Partly this is as a direct counterbalance to my chronic perfectionism which will normally have me anxiously reading and rereading...
Last week, I attended the yellow lady bugs conference and have been spending some time unpacking my learnings, some for myself, some for my practice — this one I think is mostly a self-learning but one I hope will be informative for readers about the variety of ways of engaging with concepts and feelings. Readers may like to consider this for their interactions with folks who think differently to them, especially if wishing to convey or receive ideas with them. The session that particularly...
