Liberate Learning is a way for me to share with others some of what I’ve learned through my journey as an inclusive educator. I share techniques and strategies for powerful, equitable and engaging teaching and facilitation practice which you can slot straight into what you do best. It is my hope to create a world where everyone feels welcome and has the support they need to succeed (whatever that means for them). Remember, you don’t need to change the world to change someone’s world.
Welcome fellow humans, spaceship earth sure is a complicated vessel with such a diverse set of fellow passengers. It’s a long journey we’ll be on together with many opportunities to learn and grow, let’s make sure everyone feels valued and welcome!
I began my journey as a teacher volunteering in high school math classes before eventually teaching in an official capacity in computer science at University. Through this I saw so many young people who were disengaged from learning and distressingly I saw a number who despite obvious talents and interest, withdrew from their studies and gave up.
This galvanised in me the urgent need to change education. Education needs to a be a place where everyone can thrive not merely survive. Folks from marginalised backgrounds are told so often that they can’t and this means what might seem like small setbacks can end up being the ‘straw that broke the camel’s back'. Look up constrained agency to learn more about this!
To do this requires both pedagogic (teaching practice) change but also cultural change through representation, language, etc. I see my role as both a guide in teaching and learning and advocate for equity. My dedication for the latter flows through both everyday allyship through challenging bias and stigma, amplifying representations of diverse human experience, and building and contributing to networks and communities of practice around equitable practice in workplace and education contexts.
Please join me in making the world kinder and more accessible, one step at a time.
If you too are on the journey to make learning accessible and think you’d benefit from my expertise to create more engaging and inclusive learning experiences, I am open to running training, presentations and private consulting. Please reach out via LinkedIn to discuss your project.
